Playmate of the Month January 1971 - Liv Lindeland




Description:
Early Nordic peoples often named their offspring after mythical heroes of the vivid world around them: deities, flowers, birds or seasons of the year. A contemporary variation on that ancient custom gave Norwegian-born Liv Lindeland, who now lives in the U.S., her name. "'Liv' means 'life' in Norwegian," says the 25-year-old aspiring actress. "I think it suits me well, and it helps explain why I want a life that's full of excitement." True to the tradition of her Viking ancestors, those legendary voyagers, she says her name "also reflects my urge to do the unusual and to travel to places I've never seen. In fact, it was my restlessness that made me decide to come to America in 1965. I came just for a visit; but when I arrived, I liked the country and the people so much I decided to stay." The first city in the U.S. she called home was Boston, where she lived for four years and began a career in fashion modeling. An awakening interest in television and film work, nurtured by some encouragement from friends, took Liv to Los Angeles - and to Hollywood's film studios. After a year on the Coast, she's already creating quite a stir - both on the sets and off, where she moves in filmdom's upper-strata star-producer-director social whirl. So far, besides continuing her modeling, Liv has made several TV commercials, appeared on <i>Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In</i> and soon will be making that dreamed-of leap to the big screen: a role in the film version of Jacqueline Susann's <i>The Love Machine</i>, to be released next year. Though she's landed a movie part and seems to be scaling the proverbial ladder in impressive fashion, Liv believes she needs more and wider dramatic experience. To that end, she recently enrolled in the Robert Arthur Workshop, a drama school in which she's improving not only her acting ability but also her English. "But I wouldn't want to lose my accent entirely," she says. "I want to modify it for films and television, but my voice is part of my personality; it identifies my national heritage." In addition to studying diction and delivery, Liv is also boning up on cinematography and editing. "I want to understand what's happening on the other side of the camera," she says, "and the only way to do that is to find out from the people who know. So I ask lots of questions - and I try to read everything I can about the subject. In fact, that's how I became interested in the films of D. W. Griffith, Charlie Chaplin and Orson Welles. I found that by studying the classics, I could learn more about today's films. To tell you the truth, though, I really don't feel that the movies being made today can compare - in character portrayals or film techniques - with such greats as <i>The Hunchback of Notre Dame</i> or <i>Citizen Kane</i>, which I believe is the greatest film ever made." While diligent Liv plans to pursue her movie career as far as it will take her, she sees herself - in time - reversing the customary showbiz exodus by moving on to the theater. "Since I enrolled in the workshop, I've had a desire to act on Broadway. More now than ever before, I believe that's where the fun is, because you're playing to a live audience. In the theater, much more than in films, you're aware of the audience's expectations and of the quality of your own performance, because the people are right there in front of you. And from their applause - or lack of it - you can really tell if you're a good actress or just another struggling amateur." Says Liv of her long-range future: "Someday I'd like to go back and do film or theater work in Norway; though I've been away so long, it's still really home to me." Even if she goes ahead with her plans to perform in Scandinavia, we hope lively Liv will eventually overcome her ancestral urge to roam - and settle down Stateside for good.

Playmate of the Month December 1994 - Elisa Bridges

Just think of me as one of the guys," says 21-year-old Playmate Elisa Bridges. Her statement is greeted with skepticism. Look at the evidence.

"No, I'm serious," she insists. "I have some good female friends, but I prefer the company of men. I may have been born in Miami, but I grew up near Dallas. Maybe that's why I love to do guy things. You know, jet ski, hang out at the beach, shoot some pool at the marina."

After 14 years living in Flower Mound, Texas (that's right, Flower Mound), Elisa still has plenty of the Lone Star in her. But she never got much of an opportunity to bask on Texas' beautiful Gulf shoreline. So, after graduating from Marcus High in Flower Mound, she packed up her diploma and headed off for Florida's Gold Coast. "I have this thing about water," Elisa says. "I love the way it feels on my body. I love the way it glitters in the sun. It's always moving, like something alive. I can't stand to be away from the water."

Thanks to her globe-trotting parents (her father works as an architect for oil companies and her mother is a travel agent), she has spent her share of days in such faraway places as Yemen and Spain. She was quite willing to chase her relatives around the world. "I treasure my family," she says. "My parents have been married forever. That's the kind of stability I want to have when I get married. I have an older brother and a younger sister, and we're all very close. We laugh like crazy when we're together. When I told my brother I was going to appear in Playboy, he gave me this stricken look and said, 'My dream of meeting a Playmate finally comes true, and it turns out to be my sister. Damn!' We care a lot for one another. I think that's why they respect my need for independence."

These days, Elisa's drive for self-sufficiency includes a beach apartment of her own and a burgeoning new career in modeling and acting. Her next exotic vacation destination is the south of France. Until then, she has plans to buy her own boat. "I really like the idea of piloting a boat," she says. "In fact, I want to get my captain's license. I'd love to be able to see dolphins every day."

We drove this willful beauty all over Miami in maritime pursuits. The first stop was the Coast Guard, where a lieutenant handed her an applicaton, then blushed as he informed her that a physical was required. "Hey, I'm in great shape!" Elisa chided. Our next stop was for a six pack - "Don't you love a good juice on a hot day?" - then it was off to a marina, where the dockhands broke into spontaneous applause upon her arrival. Elisa just grinned. "I don't think I'll have any trouble finding a crew!"

By a remarkable appellative coincidence, October Playmate Reagan Wilson's escort, when his father's business finds him in Los Angeles, is apt to be the California governor's son, Michael. Lively as she is in conversation about sports or theater or books, Miss October nevertheless exhibits an abiding disinterest in politics. "Mike and I are more likely to talk about real stallions than dark stallions," says Reagan, an active San Fernando Valley equestrienne. "My own stallion, Popcorn, is stabled back in Missoula, Montana, but that doesn't keep me from getting out on the trails almost every afternoon. Besides being fun, riding is the best way to keep in shape," Reagan adds, as if there must be some secret to the grace of her 40-25-35 figure. Miss October rides also for simple release from the special demands of her double career as fledgling actress and student writer--exciting new endeavors for wich she has left her job as girl Friday in a public-relations firm. Veteran of a summer appearance on TV's The Big Valley and of a recent, encouraging Paramount Pictures screen test, blonde-haired and green-eyed Reagan is still hesitant about making the big try for stardom. "The competition is tougher than ever," she says, "so much so that it's silly for anyone to put all her hopes into acting. So I'm going to try to devote at least half my time now to my long-standing ambition to be a writer. I'd like to be a humorist, but I think I have one serious novel to write."
Away from typewriter and camera, Reagan's avocations include body surfing at Malibu and all-night dancing at Los Angeles' myriad go-go cellars. "Both are pretty hectic, but after trying to express myself in work, I usually feel like some good clean non-verbal fun," says an October miss who earns an A from Playboy in all kinds of communication.

You don't need psychic powers to surmise that a girl with the offbeat name of Echo has parents who were products of the Sixties. But Echo Leta Johnson herself is very much a woman of the Nineties. Take the way our January centerfold - who turns 19 this month - chose to celebrate her 18th birthday. "My best girlfriend and I jumped into her convertible and drove straight through from Santa Fe to Las Vegas and had a blast, going to floor shows every night, heading in late and then basking in the sun all afternoon. We blew our stash in three days, but the memory is worth every cent. We were like Thelma and Louise, only we didn't pack a pistol." Not that Echo needs one. Her good looks and her flat-out attidue toward life are lethal enough. Last June, just after graduating from Santa Fe High School (Echo was born, and now lives, in Austin, but she grew up in Ecuador - her father was a hat exporter there - and Santa Fe), Echo entered a local beauty pageant and was promptly crowned Miss Santa Fe. She caught the attention of a photographer shooting for Playboy Germany and suddenly was the toast of New Mexico. Although Echo's triumphs have accelerated the pace of her life, they don't seem to have turned her head. "People keep asking me why I don't go to Hollywood, but the starlet route has never appealed to me. I want more control over my life than that." Her intention is to move to Dallas - the apparel-mart capital of Texas - to attend SMU to earn a degree in fashion merchandising. "My dream is to someday own and run a hip, upscale clothing store, for men and women. My boyfriend, Alex, and my brother both have absolutely great builds, and I just love to dress them." They are also both naturally great dancers, she adds. "I love everything from the Texas two-step to dirty dancing and hip-hop. If a man can't dance and he doesn't look good in his clothes, he'll never get mine off," she vows - a promising threat if we've ever heard one.
